Dr Sharon Belmo is a UK trained consultant dermatologist and is on the GMC specialist register. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Dundee in 2006 and completed dermatology specialist training at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, a national centre of excellence for dermatology. She now practices in London. During training, Dr Belmo gained invaluable experience in the management of a range of dermatological conditions, skin cancer and became proficient in performing skin surgery. As such, she is a competent and confident general dermatologist, treating all skin types. With 15 years of NHS experience, including 5 years as a substantive NHS dermatology consultant, Dr Belmo now mainly practices in the private sector. BACKGROUND Dr Sharon Belmo has a very humble and varied upbringing: a woman of colour, Scottish by birth, Ghanaian by heritage and English by residence. She believes that her life experiences have driven her unquestionable passion for promoting diversity in medicine; she is a strong advocate for equality in healthcare for all. Dr Belmo is without a doubt, a people person. She is passionate about dermatology as the speciality allows her to help patients become more comfortable in their own skin and hair. SPECIALIST INTERESTS ​ Dr Belmo has specialist interests in skin of colour and hair loss, particularly Afro-textured hair. She has undergone ethnic skin and hair observerships in Paris and the US. She is the co-founder and clinical lead of the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology Skin of Colour Resource, in which she launched in 2016. Dr Belmo is the medical advisor to the CARF UK CCCA support group. In 2021, she wrote the first dermatology for skin of colour syllabus for the UK dermatology specialist training curriculum, setting a precedence for future dermatologists’ experience and training in darker skin tones. She also runs inMYskin; an image bank developed with the aim to increase representation of skin of colour in medical resources. ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr Belmo has authored a skin of colour chapter in the textbook, dermatology training: the essentials. She has presented at national and international conferences, regularly lectures, and publishes work pertaining to skin of colour in peer reviewed journals.
