Helping Children to Understand Social Care

Helping Children to Understand Social Care

Children’s social care refers to the different kinds of support that children, young people and their

families receive from their local authorities when they need extra help.

A new resource ‘Children’s Social Care National Framework’ has been published, in an illustrated form, to help children better understand the framework. However, many children and social care

professionals are likely to read the publication with some degree of cynicism.

The Guide states children will be asked where they would like to live. However, the reality is often not like this at all. Many children are simply placed and moved around the country based on availability –and in the view of EHP Children’s Homes Consultancy - cost. The Children’s Commissioner highlighted this problem in The Big Ask survey see: The Big Ask - The Big Answer (childrenscommissioner.gov.uk). The Survey heard from children who had been moved around the country, and with little say in when or where they were going.

Although the Survey was published in 2021, there is little to suggest anything has changed.
